Keylogging Hardware – Is the Computer you are Using Bugged?

Some of you may remember the old 70′s TV show Mission Impossible where Mr. Phelps or one of his team of agents would unscrew the receiver cap on a phone handset and connect a tiny listening device called a bug.

Bugs are not just for TV shows they are real devices that can be placed on telephones and under lampshades to covertly listen in on conversations.

Today there are bugs that can be placed on computers that allow someone to listen in on what you are typing on your computer.

This keyboard listening device is called a keylogger. The keylogger is installed on the keyboard cable and then plugged into the cable connection on a computer.

You should check the back of the computer when you use a public computer to see if a keylogger is attached.

Where I bank there are two desktop computers set up for customers to use.

A bank may check their equipment regularly, but it would only take a moment to plug in a keylogger into a PC when no one is looking.

You may wonder why you should care. There reason you need to be concerned about these devices is they contain a memory chip and can record everything you type into the computer you are using.

A hacker can place one of these devices a desktop computer in a public library and record your keystrokes as you enter passwords for your email and bank accounts.

Never access your bank accounts or email accounts that contain any of your financial information from public computers in libraries, banks and airport kiosks.

Only use public computers for doing research or web browsing and only log into your email and bank accounts from your own computers that are running up-to-date security software and a firewall.
